MARCH – DENVER, CO
SEEING RUBY WALK toward me through the foyer of the hotel after a few weeks apart made me realize that I had been tense as hell the last few days. I still hadn’t quite gotten over the stress of Super Tuesday, but it was more than that. When she rounded the street corner and her eyes met mine, I could feel my shoulders relax, my lungs let go of the tightness they’d been holding onto, and a smile peeled across my face.
Her face mirrored mine. There was a sudden skip in her step and she jogged over to me, colliding into me in a wave of coconut scented, red lipped, dark-hair-flying, squeezing joy.
I wrapped my arms around her, squeezing back, and lifted her up until our lips met and the last few weeks felt like they were worth something after all.
I was starting to love states that held both party caucuses or primaries.
We had yet to say anything, but from the amount of time I spent thinking about her, about those legs wrapped around me, the things I had been waiting to do to her, I think we both figured we needed to get a few things out of the way first. Which is why I had told Danny that I was getting my own room this time and why Ruby had met me at the hotel.
We composed ourselves enough to walk to the elevators like the civilized adults we were, our connection holding in our fingers that intertwined and the sly smiles we kept shooting over to each other as we waited for the elevator. Ruby’s teeth dug into her bottom lip in between smiles and, finally, the elevator dinged open and we were alone inside.
No need to be civilized in there. I didn’t think about cameras until later, but I don’t think it would’ve mattered much. She was back on me in a second, her fingers coursing through my hair, her lips demanding mine, her body pressing up against me, sending all rational thought to another place and time.
When we finally made it to my room, I felt like it had taken ages. I slid the card through the reader on the handle. That green light and the click that followed were some of the greatest things I had seen or heard in a good while. We had our shirts off before the door fully closed behind us.

I loved the way Ruby looked, leaning over the bathroom counter, dabbing at her newly applied bright-red lipstick and swiping at stray hairs framing her face. It made me want to grab her and pull her back into bed, but I knew we had plans. This was one of the only times we had been able to find in our schedules where we would have a long enough break to actually plan an outing. Ruby had found a local brewery where they had live music on certain nights. Tonight, the feature was a small blues group and even though they were far from Dave Matthews Band, we were excited to check it out.
